Quiet, please.

The bookshelves are filled. I now have a working library in my living room. If you want to sign up for a library card, just stop by one day, and I’m sure I can fashion one out of construction paper and stickers.

DSC_0205

They are not organized by means of the Dewey Decimal System yet, but one day, when I locate the rest of our books from all of the random places I like to hide them, I hope to get them organized by subject. I did manage to keep art and decorating books all in one area, but that’s about it.

I tried to fill the shelves not only with books, but with things that are meaningful to us. I don’t want to live in a staged house that has no heart, I want my house to be home filled with little pieces of us. Granted, there are a few tchotchkes on the shelves that have no special meaning other than me liking them, but most things have a purpose. Here, let me explain a few…

They’re still a work in progress. I have more books to fill the empty spaces, and more pictures and stuff to crowd the books, but for now, this will work.

New Blogger in Town

You heard me right. There’s a new blogger in town. She’s smart. She’s funny. She’s sweet. And she’s just bursting with creativity! [And to be honest, I’m kind of partial to the girl.] Introducing the newest blogger…

DSC_0053-1

and her blog

imagination-spark

The official link to the blog is www.imagination-spark.blogspot.com, and it will be filled with all of her creative ventures like drawings, poetry, photography and stories.

So hop on over, read her first post, and give her a shout. She’d love to hear from you.

Now I have to go figure out how to divide up blogging time.

They’ll be on display at an art installation for Etsy at SXSW here in Austin. If you’re in town for the event in March, stop by and check ‘em out along with other items from the Etsy Austin crew.

Randomly funny moments that you happen upon in life

The house was pretty quiet this day. It was the kind of quiet that makes you uneasy…it makes you wonder what kind of mischief is being done, and how much is it going to cost you. But every once in a while, the silence isn’t accompanied by little acts of disobedience, it’s just two siblings quietly enjoying a game together.

They had no idea they were synchronizing the movement of their feet. It was a funny scene to behold.

Even more hilarious was the addition of the fur child. I think the three get together in secret to plan these moments and wait for me to come in with my camera. It made me smile nonetheless.

I’ve said it before, but I sure do love those freckles, those eyes, that kind heart, and of course, that mustache.

Cinnamony sugar goodness and one more WIP

I got this book for my birthday:

thepioneerwomancooks

It’s full of yummy recipes, photos, and stories of life on working ranch. I’ve so enjoyed reading the book and gawking at the amazing pictures that I sort of forgot to actually use it for its intended purpose. Well, this morning I had a hankerin’ to bake. [Yes, my south Texas upbringing had an effect on my vocabulary.] So I picked out something that didn’t take too long, look too complicated, and was full of yummy. The French Breakfast Puffs fit the bill.

This is what our morning looked like:

This is what my afternoon will look like:

And in between, it will look something like this:

Throw in a dentist appointment, a trip to Hobby Lobby, and soccer practice and we have a pretty full schedule today. Looks like the French Breakfast Puffs might be French Lunch Puffs and French Dinner Puffs. Not that I mind.

I hope your day is filled with cinnamony sugar goodness!

Keeping busy

DSC_0025-1

DSC_0028-1 DSC_0024-1

Or at least trying to. I’ve had artist’s block lately. I don’t like it when I’m stumped. I don’t like it when my few short hours to paint is wasted on a bunch of trials and errors because I have no idea where I’m going with a painting. Once it does come to me though, oh sweet satisfaction! One good day of painting can make up for all the bad. Let’s hope this trend continues.

The Spot

Maybe you have a favorite reading chair, or window seat, or cozy corner to curl up in with a good book, but in my house, here’s the preferred spot:

Comfy? No. Cozy? Somewhat. Warm? Not at all. But preferred by children

and animals alike.

Maybe it’s the built in headrests.

In Bloom

These are blooming in my backyard despite my best efforts to neglect them. It’s probably my neglect that’s keeping them alive. I’ve never really had a green thumb. In fact, I’m pretty sure I can figure out a way to kill a fake plant. I’m so thankful that such beautiful things don’t depend on me to thrive and bloom.

DSC_0125-1 At times I take our world and its beauty for granted, but it’s the little reminders like these, in the middle of winter, no less, that show me the wonder of God’s creation.

Torture

Because I’m a mean mom, I made my poor dog stand outside in freezing temperatures, looking pitiful while I took her picture.

I couldn’t help myself. Look at that hair! Look at those ears! Look at that dirty window. eek!

DSC_0050-1

Her little pleas didn’t work.DSC_0052-1

Nor did her pathetic poses.

DSC_0056-1

Even little snide gestures, which made me think my rank as her favorite had changed, had no effect on my opening the door.

DSC_0057-1

What finally did work? Technological difficulties. Call it what you will, a malfunction, a dog’s answered prayer, but my camera froze up, and I was forced to stop this little sideshow and let the cold canine inside.

After this incident and my attempt to cut her nails this morning, I don’t know if I’ll ever be her favorite again.  Serves me right I guess.
