We’ve been reading a Christmas/winter themed book every day since December 1st to further fuel the excitement as we countdown the days until Christmas. The plan was to sew a wall hanging with a pocket big enough to hold a book and switch the book out each day as another advent option, but I haven’t had time yet to dedicate to the project. But, having a book ready to go each morning works just as well. Here’s some of our favorites:
::Snow by Uri Shulevitz -The book is beautifully simplistic and richly illustrated.
::How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess – A classic.
::The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg– visually stunning.
::The Night Before Christmas a pop-up by Robert Sabuda – Amazing!
::The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats –one of our bedtime reads since Audrie was a baby.
::Humphrey’s First Christmas by Carol Heyer – Charming story and illustrations.
And I had to include Too Many Toys by David Shannon. Maybe it’s wishful thinking to hope that this book will send a message to the kids to give away a bunch of their old toys before we amass a plethora of new ones.
There are many more beautiful Christmas books that I’ve yet to check out from the library, but I’m sure we’ll be adding more titles to our favorites list. We hope to read a book a day leading up to reading The Night Before Christmas on the night before Christmas. I know, how original. And on Christmas morning we will be reading the true Christmas story, right from the gospel of Luke. It’s tradition.
