Jumping

Besides playing in a box or climbing trees, I think jumping on the bed is one of the supreme joys of childhood. In our house, it’s almost a nightly routine to take a bath, get partially dressed and then jump as much as you can before Mom and Dad come in to subdue the craziness.

Judging by the look on Finn’s face, though, I think next time instead of stopping the action, I should join in on the fun.

IF: Flying

Apple Pickin’

Our latest field trip with our homeschool group landed us right in the middle of a bunch of apples. Not the ones you find in an orchard,though; the ones you find here:

And since my talent lies in areas other than computers, I brought along the expert in the family to help our daughter.

The field trip consisted of a bunch of kids having access to their own Mac to create a slideshow, video, or sdwpoykapf, or rskuepcma. [That’s how a lot of technical terms translate in my brain.]

So while all of the computer stuff was taking place, Finn and I walked over to the Starbucks, bought second breakfast, and parked ourselves outside the Apple Store to watch people walk by as we munched on our deliciously delectable donuts.

We then took a picture of our feet...

and pictures of each other.

I also took an opportunity to snap a quick family portrait while Jonathan and Audrie created their ninja video.

At the end of the day I learned that everyone who goes on a field trip to the Apple store gets a free t-shirt, and that Starbucks donuts are really good. Thankfully, Audrie learned much more.

Here’s my latest little birdie illustration. He’s for a project I’ve been working on for quite sometime now. I can see the end in sight…it’s barely visible, but it’s there.

Crafty Friday: Monsters

Monsters have invaded our house! They’re under our beds, in our closets, and joining us for dinner. If you want a monster infestation in your house, here’s what you need:

-Googly eyes
-pipe cleaners
-pompons
-toilet paper tube
-yarn or ribbon
-glue/ hot glue gun
-old stuffed animal OR
-felt
-thread
-stuffing
-needle/sewing machine

Toilet Paper Tube Monster:

Step 1: Cut a piece of felt big enough to wrap the toilet paper tube, wrap the tube and attach it with glue.

Step 2: Glue on as many googly eyes as you wish.

Step 3: Add a mouth and nose. You can use a pompon for the nose, and either a pipe cleaner or a piece of cut felt for the mouth and attach it with glue.

Step 4: Add hair using either faux fur, yarn or ribbon, and pipe cleaner antennas. Attach with…yep, you guessed it …glue. Hot glue works best to hold heavier weight pieces like the antennas [so parents have to help out a bit with this project.] If you don’t want to use hot glue, you can make antennas out of paper, or make dangling antennas with ribbon and pompons. Refurbished Stuffed Animal Monster:

Step 1: Find a stuffed animal that your child doesn’t mind altering. We used a kid’s meal toy.

Step 2: Cover the animal in faux fur or felt. You can leave features such as arms and legs showing.

Step 3: Add eyes, a nose and a mouth.

Step 4: Add antennas or hair or both. We happened to leave the animal’s ears exposed which made it easy to attach the pipe cleaner antennas. If your toy doesn’t have ears, you can attach the antennae with a dab of hot glue. Meet Rufus:

Our third monster required a lot more steps and a slight amount of sewing skills. In order to keep this post short, I’ll post his steps later. Meet IO [pronounced eye-oh]:

And I wanted to share some pictures of our little cousin, Heath. He joined in on the pumpkin painting fun last week and his grandma sent us the pictures. She said he had enough paint on his plate to paint a whole pumpkin patch!

Look what I found…

…at a garage sale last weekend:

No, not the kid…the drafting table! It was sitting at the end of a driveway, calling to me. I only had $15 in my wallet, and I was ready to go put a down payment on the thing to hold it, but when I walked up, the price tag said $15. Serendipity! I looked at the guy and said “I’ll take it!” It was such a good deal that I almost feel as if I cheated him out of his money. But I’m not losing sleep over it.

Now I just need an art studio to put it in, and that might cost a bit more than $15.
