My husband hates to play Scrabble. When it’s the chosen game for game night, he groans, makes faces, and complains a little. I on the other hand know that Scrabble is a good way to teach a child spelling and look forward to challenging my kids’ minds.

But soon after we start our word arranging, I realize that my plans to turn my kids into the next spelling bee champions won’t come to fruition. Why? Well because Mr. Grumpy Pants decides that Scrabble is super boring, and the only way to have fun while playing this game is to make up new words. And I have to admit that there are a lot more giggles when our board is filled with words like bigmoonbad, aieee, manwity, and the meenls.

I’m not going to be the one to have to explain my poor spellers to future English teachers. I’ll just let them play a game of Scrabble with Jonathan.

Well we survived our one night camping trip, and, as you’ll notice, I don’t have my computer fixed yet so I had to draw the account of our adventure. Here’s how it went.

We loaded up our vehicle with just the essentials we would need for one night of roughing it; essentials like Oreos, air mattresses, every outdoor toy you can imagine, cupcakes, donuts, cinnamon rolls, pillows, stuffed animals, magazines, several pairs of shoes, and more Oreos. Here’s what our site looked like after we staked a spot:

We set up our tent, and it only took us three tries.

When our friends got there, we helped them set up their tent while the kids played.

We went hiking along the lake and saw a lighthouse, and Finn swears he saw a shark.

We got back to camp and built a fire.

We cooked dinner and ate it.

We made the traditional campfire food…s’mores. We also feasted on cheesecake as well as a combination cheesecake s’more.

After putting the kids to bed, we talked a bit about the campfire, how rugged we felt camping, and ate a bit more cheesecake that had been warmed by the fire. We then headed off to our tents and tried to fall asleep to the serenading sounds of 10 loud teenage boys camping next to us. At 1AM, I took a stroll to the port-a-potties with Finn. At 3AM it started raining. At 6AM we were asking forgiveness for whatever we had done to bring upon us such a raging storm.

At 7AM we started packing everything up before we floated away or got struck by lightning. At 8:45AM, we put the last of our stuff in the car and as we climbed in to drive away, the rain quit. Just like that. And it didn’t rain again for the rest of the day.

camp9 Soaking wet, muddy and cold, we drove away from the campsite and made one final stop before heading home.

camp10 And that was it…the end of our one night fiasco.

And, yes, we checked the weather before we decided to embark on this adventure.

And, yes, we did know it was going to rain.

And, yes, we did enjoy our syrup soaked pancakes after all was said and done.

Happy Houses

We’re about to embark on a one night camping trip with friends. We’re facing a chance of thunderstorms and an approaching cold front. Pray for us.

While lying in my tent, I might be dreaming of warmer dwelling places like these bright houses in downtown Austin. I love funky colored houses. I think, if Jonathan let me, I would live in a bright green house with a red door and white outer trim and black accents. Or maybe a red house with a black door. But really, any one of these houses will do.

I think this last one’s my favorite. Bright green, aquamarine, a pop of orange on the wreath, and disco balls. Perfect.

I’m in love.

I finally decided change my winter header into something more spring-like. Since I can’t upload and edit photos right now, I had to do something to update my blog, so a new look was the answer. I’m currently working on a couple of new paintings for spring, and the header was inspired by one of them.

In other news, changes in our housing situation are on the horizon, but they’re not quite in focus yet. We have to be out of our house in just over a month, but we’ve yet to find another abode. You’d hardly know it by looking at us, though. I think we’re in denial because we haven’t started packing anything. Oh well, we’re last minute kind of people anyway. We work better under pressure.

And I can’t talk about changes without mentioning the season. After an unusually cold and wet winter, the appearance of sunshine, spring green, and flowers was much anticipated. I’ve been enjoying so, the serenading songs of the birds who were just as confused about our weather as we were. The poor things kept trying to come out and sing when the weather showed hints of warmth, but then were caught by surprise in a central Texas snowstorm. I think the warmer weather is here to stay now, though as I type this, grey clouds and rain fill the sky. But on those sunny days we’re outside, soaking in our vitamin D. We’ve already waded through ponds in bare feet, made grassy stick and stone soup, collected treasures on nature walks, and just basked in the sun’s rays. All of this is documented in pictures that are waiting to be shared.

And since I can’t post without leaving some kind of visual reference, here’s a picture. I took this of Jonathan several weeks ago. It was a camera mishap and was way overexposed, but I kind of like the ghostly effect. It looks like modern art.

DSC_0202 Anyhoo, I hope to have new pictures for the next post.

Until then,

I’m still trying to figuring out my photo uploading problem, so in the meantime, I’ll share a little bit about myself. I have an obsession; an addiction, really. I like to take pictures of my shoes. I don’t know when it started, or why I do it. Maybe it’s my way of saying “I was here,” or “I’m the one behind the camera.” Whatever it is, it’s lead to quite the collection of feet photos. shoes
