Sixteen

Last Saturday, my beautiful daughter turned 16 years old. It's been such a joy to watch this girl blossom. She is wise beyond her years. She's smart as a whip, quick-witted, and oh so talented. She puts me to shame when it comes to art. Almost every free moment she has is devoted to sketching, painting, playing the piano, or strumming the ukulele (her new obsession). On a side note, she received the ukulele for Christmas, and by sunset, she was strumming out familiar tunes. She'd never played a string instrument before. It's kind of annoying how she makes us all look talentless. ;)

Audrie loves words and word play and continues to challenge me almost daily with some sort of game involving rhymes, or haikus, or synonyms, or riddles. And I love every minute of it. She is super sweet, and good big sister (most of the time), and just a delight to be around. I don't like to think about how in two and a half years, she'll be leaving this nest. I'm not ready for our family dynamic to change. So, until then, I'm going to cherish this time we have while our nest is full, and continue to remind her of all of the great colleges we have just right down the street.

Happy birthday, sweet girl.
I love you so.

4

Better late than never.

My baby boy turned four at the end of July. FOUR! I missed doing his birthday post because we were traveling on the big day, one of four trips we took last month. It's been a busy July, and things haven't slowed down for August, but I'll tell you more about it in my next post. For now, a very late birthday post, just in case August ever looks back at these and wonders why Mom forgot to wish him a happy fourth birthday.

Little boy...what can I say about you. You have enriched our lives so much. Your independence and confidence amazes me. You "know" things even if you don't know things. You have a hunger to learn, and when you set your mind to achieving something, you will see it through until you're satisfied. You have already taught yourself how to write and are a confident speller. Your most recent letter reads DEOL AUGUST HABTPY (Dear August, Happy Birthday).

You seem to be following in your sister's footsteps when it comes to music. Thanks to her, you've learned how to play several songs including Silent Night, House of Gold, and Chopsticks, and you took it upon yourself to learn March from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. (Thank you Little Einstein's)
You are quite the ham, and are learning the art of making jokes, though, like your spelling, your jokes don't always make sense. Lock-lock jokes are among your favorites, and the punch line is always "Yes."
We laugh every time.
Sweet boy, what a blessing you are. Though you are four, going on 24, you are and always will be my baby.
I love you so much.

10

Today, this handsome face, my firstborn son leaves the realm of single digits, and enters the uncharted territory of double digits.

Finn, you have a sweet, tender heart. You love to make jokes and you have an amazing memory. Your conversations are sprinkled with large, complicated words, which are used correctly about 50% of the time. You can be extremely confident and extremely shy. You are the ham in our family sandwich. You are my hugger, and I love being on the receiving end.

Happy birthday, my favorite middle child!
I love you so very, very much.

15

*blink*

My baby girl turned 15 yesterday.
Be still my heart.
I want to scoop her up and hold onto her for as long as I can.
I know, at this point, things move at light speed until you take a breath, and wave goodbye as your child leaves the nest.
Be still my heart.

Audrie, you are beautiful inside and out. You're kind and hilarious, sweet and witty, smart and ever so talented. I'm amazed by you each and everyday.

Happy Birthday, lovely lady!

3

On Wednesday, my youngest, my beautiful baby boy turned three. My strong-willed, funny, boisterous little boy is no longer considered a baby, has moved from the toddler stage, and has stepped through the door of preschool-dom [though, I still and will forever refer to him as the baby.]

People often ask if he was supposed to be born in August, inquiring as to why he was christened as such, but that was never the intention. His actual due date was today, July 31, so to say that I hoped he would be born in August would mean that I hoped that my pregnancy would last longer than the time frame assigned to my gestating child, and anyone knows that a woman, pregnant with her third child, struggling to walk, sit, eat, sleep, breathe with a ridiculously large beach ball protruding from her midsection does not wish to extend this relationship beyond that assigned date, especially not in the middle of summer, in Texas where temperatures were climbing to 110 degrees. No, I did not hope he would be born in August. In fact, I hoped he would show his face in mid July, and as the days passed with no sign of labor, I started to panic. My husband says I went crazy. I blame it on end-of-pregnancy hormones, but I thought if he were to be born in August, people might confuse his name for his birth month, not know his name, blah, blah, blah, [I don't remember all of my wailing rants], but I actually thought if my August were to be born in August, it would ruin his life. So, yes, I went crazy. It was August's fault.

And as the story goes, on July 28th, I set out to have a baby. I walked 3 miles in scorching weather, ran [waddled] up and down my stairs what felt like 100 times [probably 10], I ate shrimp, Mexican food, spicy food, spicy Mexican shrimp food, did jumping jacks, maybe cried a bit, and absolutely begged this baby to show his face. He arrived the next day, and my baby August was born in July.

On Wednesday, my beautiful baby boy turned three. I watched him smirk as he ate a birthday breakfast donut, I smiled as he admired his birthday chalkboard drawing of a turkey, bear, and giraffe as per his request, I laughed out loud when I discovered our kitchen floor covered in sprinkles and heard August yell, "Surprise! Trixie can eat them all!" and I tried to relish every part of that day.

August Huxley, you might have listened to me once, showing up when I insanely beckoned you to arrive in July, but you have been forming your own path ever since. You are extremely independent, and I love that about you, but things might be a little easier if you would take your mom's advice once in a while. You love to say "I can do it myself!" and most times you can. You've loved music since you were a wee babe, and that love of music has evolved into a love of singing and dancing. You are quite the dancer. You love, love, love to be read to and I have no doubt you will be reading on your own fairly soon because you are a determined little boy who can "do it [yourself]." You make us laugh out loud every day.

I love you sweet boy!

9

For some reason, nine seems so much older than eight. I know it's just one year, but the idea of my son turning nine is harder to wrap my mind around. I'm pretty sure I've already said this, and that I'll say the same thing next year. It's hard to accept that time just keeps ticking on, seemingly faster and faster taking your children with it.

Sweet, sweet, Finn. You're my snuggle buddy, my prankster, and my deep thinker. You can be quite shy at times, but never at home. You're a confident user of large words, half of which you're unsure of the definition, but you don't let that stop you. If you don't know how to do something, you'll boldly state that you can teach yourself. You are also very good at explaining how things work, even if you don't know how they work. ( I believe this is a strong trait from a particular side of the family. :) I love your confidence, your mind, and your sweet heart, Mr. Finn. And of course, I love you!

Happy 9th birthday, my son!

Love,
Mom

It's funny how a time in your life can seem like ages ago and yesterday all at once.
Today my sweet little artist, this beautiful little face, turns fourteen.

What a joy it's been to see this tiny girl blossom in to such a beautiful, talented, intelligent, and hilarious young woman.

Happy birthday, my beautiful daughter.

I love you.

Two

My sweet baby boy turned two today, and once again I marvel at how quickly time flies by.

Sweet August Huxley, what a joy you are. You haven't slowed down since the day you were born. You try so hard to keep up with your older siblings, not an easy task when there are eight and eleven years separating you from your brother and sister, but you're doing a pretty good job of trying to close that gap. You are quite the ham. You love to sing and dance, and you don't like to share the spotlight. You are independent and can protest loudly when help is offered. You jump over, on top of, around, off of anything in your way. Every time we leave the house, you have to jump over the threshold. It makes me smile every time. You love your brother and sister so much, and mimic them every chance you get. You talk as much as any other Roeder (which is quite a lot), and you have the sweetest little voice, especially when you sing. You make us laugh everyday.

August, you have us all quite smitten.
Happy birthday, little man.
I'll eat you up. I love you so.

8

On Saturday, this handsome little boy with a big, big heart turned eight years old. I have a hard time wrapping my mind around that number. I celebrate while my heart aches a little because those eight years, ninety-six months, 2,920 days, millions of moments passed in a blink of an eye.

My always sweet and ever silly Finn, don't grow too fast.

Happy birthday!

13

I know the calendar says that it's been thirteen years, but I still think of  you as this little girl...

Oh, sweet Audrie, what a beautiful young woman you are growing into. You are funny, intelligent, talented, beautiful, and nothing short of amazing. How very blessed our lives have been since you made your way into the world on a cold Sunday morning thirteen years ago.

I love you so!
Happy birthday, my sweet little girl.

Love, Mom

**I had scheduled this to publish last Monday. I don't know why it didn't, and I've been so busy that I hadn't even noticed until I sat down to write a new post. I've officially been a mom of a teenager for a week now. It seems so surreal. I'm in a state of denial right now. I forget how many other steps come before acceptance, but I know it will be a while before '13' sinks in. **

One

Two years ago, the day after my birthday, I received one of the biggest surprises of my life.

Twelve months ago, I came face to face with that surprise.

And today, that sweet surprise celebrates his first birthday.

Sweet August Huxley,
You have brought so much joy and laughter to our lives in just one short year.
Happy birthday, little boy.
I love you so.

Seven

Sometimes, with all of the expectations I have for you with school, and chores, and responsibilities, I forget.
Sometimes, when I see how tall you've grown, and how much you eat, and how short your pants are, I forget. Sometimes, when I hear you read, or listen to you talk, when you use words like 'trundling', I forget.
But watching you this week, all week, as you dressed in your astronaut suit, and flew a big cardboard box to the moon countless times, I remembered that you're still my little boy.

"Little boy, you remind me how so much depends on days made of now."
 [Alison McGhee, Little Boy]

Happy 7th birthday, my sweet little Finn.

Six

My sweet, silly, energetic, rambunctious, snuggly little boy turned six today. Once again, I'm in awe at how quickly the time flies by. As much as I want to keep my baby my baby, I have to face the fact that he's growing up, oh so fast. Plus, in a few months he will no longer be my baby, he will be the bigger brother.

Captain Finn, you are an absolute joy. You make us laugh everyday. You are the ham to our family sandwich. [Audrie is the cheese ;)] I love your imagination. And I love, love, love how you embrace every bit of your being a little boy. You are the definition of childhood, and how I wish I could keep you in this state forever, or at least a little longer.

Happy birthday, Captain Finn Maximus!

I love you so much!

11

My little girl turned 11 today. My sweet, funny, creative, talented, oh so sarcastic [in a good way] little girl turned the big one one. When she was a wee little thing, I don’t know what I imagined her to be like at 11, but I don’t think it encompassed everything that she is. She is an absolute delight.

Speaking of Finn’s pirate party…

After posting about the pirate banner yesterday, I realized I never shared the pics from Finn’s party. It was thrown together in about a week because of our crazy schedule and lack of foresight. But when all was said and done, I think it was a pretty successful little shindig.

We had a lot of pirate décor…
