God made two lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. -Genesis 1:16
This was the sketch for the design with a little bit of color added. I was happier with it than with the actual illustration, mainly the softer expressions on the faces. I messed up the actual illustration quite a few times and was ready to throw it away each time, but I kept at it. Eventually, I felt that I had too much time invested to not post the painting, so I gave in.
As a bonus, here are some character sketches I'm working on for a book. I'm trying to figure out the look of the wise old owl who whips some young slacker birds into shape. I'm thinking the owl with the Stanley Kubrick eyebrows looks the part. The others seem too cute.

Beautiful! Love all the patterns, and you always do great eyes.
Very fitting quote and a nice illo to go along with it.
Fantastic illo! As usual!
Wow - a beautiful illustration... I don't see anything messed up at all!?! I hope to see more and learn a bit from you as I start my journey of experimenting... thanks for sharing :P
Very creative and very beautiful. A unique way of looking at the topic this week.

Go the Stanley Kubrick eyebrows! They work for me :)
I think the other owl sketches, as gorgeous as they are, look too nice to make cheeky little tweets listen.
Beautiful coloured illustration too.

Wow!
I love the colours...so powerful!
So contrast...so vibrant!
